Simple Paper Towel Trick Keeps Blueberries Fresh for Weeks Without Mould
Paper Towel Trick Keeps Blueberries Fresh for Weeks

Blueberries can be tricky to store correctly, but a simple storage trick can help keep them fresh for longer without going mouldy. A straightforward five-minute job can extend their shelf life significantly.

Why Blueberries Spoil Quickly

Blueberries are particularly susceptible to mould when kept in their original supermarket packaging. The plastic containers encourage condensation, which accelerates mould growth. Berries have a high water content that evaporates during storage, and when moist air meets a cold surface, it creates tiny water droplets that hasten mould development.

The Simple Solution

Cookbook author and founder of Tried, Tested, and True, Lisa Childs, has shared a straightforward technique for storing blueberries properly. The method requires nothing more than paper towels.

Lisa said: "Because the original berry containers are vented, berries stored in them will not last quite as long. To make your berries stay fresh longer, store berries in a large, shallow container with an airtight lid, lined with paper towels."

How It Works

Paper towels are highly effective at absorbing any condensation that forms within the container, keeping the berries dry. Fridges are humid environments, and blueberries left sitting still tend to accumulate moisture, leading to mould.

Using an airtight food container, glass mason jars, or even takeaway food trays also helps, as it prevents berries from being stacked on top of each other, further limiting moisture build-up.

Step-by-Step Guide to Keep Berries Fresh

  • Choose the best blueberries: At the supermarket, select berries from the back of the shelf and avoid any that look dark or shrivelled.
  • Wash thoroughly: Rinse the blueberries under the tap to eliminate any bacteria.
  • Dry completely: Spread the berries on a generous layer of paper towels to remove excess moisture.
  • Line the container: Place additional paper towels inside an airtight food container before adding the blueberries.
  • Store in the fridge: Ensure the berries are completely dry, as any excess moisture encourages mould and decay.

Your blueberries should stay fresh for at least a week longer than normal. Some people have found that this storage method can extend their shelf life by as much as three weeks.
