The North East is set for a mixed week of weather, with rain, thunder, and hail expected before temperatures climb to 24C by the weekend, according to the Met Office.
Week Overview
Newcastle's weather charts indicate rain on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, interspersed with sunny spells. There is also a risk of hail and thunder at times. Maximum temperatures until Thursday will reach 18C, but they will then rise, with Friday seeing highs of 20C, Saturday 22C, and Sunday 24C.
This follows reports that the global hot weather event El Nino is 80% likely to occur this summer.
Met Office Forecaster Comments
Met Office forecaster Craig Snell said that after the showers during the week, the weather is expected to settle by the weekend and “could potentially feel markedly warmer.” He added: “There are hints as we go into the weekend we may well see a slight warming up. It’s hinting at 24C for London on Saturday, at least into the low 20s, maybe mid-20s across the South East.”
A band of rain will spread east on Monday, followed by sunshine and scattered showers on Tuesday and Wednesday. Thursday will see another band of rain across the country, and Friday will bring sunshine and showers. By the weekend, higher pressure will build over the south, but it may take longer to settle in the north.
“After quite a bit of a changeable week with some potential cold periods, when it settles down even 24C, 25C could potentially feel markedly warmer,” Mr Snell said.
