The North East is preparing for a return to scorching temperatures this week, following a brief period of more typical summer weather after an intense heatwave that prompted red weather warnings across the country. According to the Met Office, this week will see temperatures climb again, with less cloud cover than the previous heatwave, though similar heat levels are expected.
Monday and Tuesday: Cloudy Start to the Week
The Met Office warns that Monday will be overcast across much of the North East, with the potential for "the odd spot of rain, especially over hills and near eastern coasts." Windy conditions are expected over hills, with breezy and warmer weather elsewhere. The maximum temperature on Monday is forecast to be 21 °C.
Tuesday will remain largely cloudy, particularly across western hills, with a chance of light rain late morning. Sunny intervals are expected to develop in the east later in the day, with winds easing and temperatures becoming warm, reaching a maximum of 22 °C.
Wednesday to Friday: Temperatures Soar
From Wednesday to Friday, the outlook is for dry and sunny conditions to end the week. The Met Office predicts "light winds, though breezier across hills and for most on Friday. Temperatures increasing, becoming very warm or hot."
Temperatures will cool off again heading into the weekend, but a warm week is expected for many. The weather varies throughout the region, so we have broken down the average forecast for areas in the North East.
County Durham: Sunshine and Highs of 26°C
Monday is expected to be overcast across much of County Durham, with the sun peeking out on Tuesday and Wednesday before full sunshine on Thursday and Friday. Only a light drizzle of rain is expected at the weekend, with the rest of the week being dry and bright.
Areas in Durham have typically been hotter than the rest of the North East, though temperatures on the warmest days sit barely above the rest of the region. 26°C is the expected temperature Wednesday through to Friday, with higher UV indexes closer to the weekend. The beginning of the week is a little windier than the later half.
Tyneside: Warmest Day on Wednesday
With rain expected tomorrow morning, Tyneside will see similar weather trends to County Durham, with wind and rain forecasts very similar between the two. The warmest days of the week will still be Wednesday through to Friday, though there are some temperature differences. Wednesday will be the hottest day in the week for the region, with 26°C forecast as of now. The following two days, while sunnier, will not be hotter, sitting at an average of 25°C. The weekend is similarly disappointing, with heavy clouds and a return to typical summer temperatures.
Northumberland: Cooler but Still Warm
Northumberland is decidedly cooler than the rest of the region this week. The Met Office estimates rain tonight and tomorrow morning, followed by a cooler day than the rest of the North East. The hottest day of the week will only push the mercury up to around 24°C in Northumberland, with temperatures barely pushing 20°C for the rest of the week. However, areas inland and away from hills can expect more balmy temperatures in the middle of the week. The weekend still brings a sour end to another warm week.
