Hetan Soni, scent expert at Perfume Essence, said: "Midges locate people using a combination of body heat, carbon dioxide and scent. While no perfume can stop insects from finding you completely, fragrances containing citronella may help make you a less appealing target."
Citronella is rich in a compound called citral, which many flying insects naturally avoid. This compound disrupts the scent signals insects use when searching for hosts. Citral can also be discovered in perfumes containing lemongrass, so if you possess a fragrance with citronella or lemongrass, it is worth applying some before you set off for the day or evening.

Hetan explained: "This is why citronella has been used for decades in candles, sprays and outdoor products. When incorporated into perfumes, it can provide a lighter, more wearable alternative that may offer some deterrent effect while still smelling fresh and pleasant."
