With hot weather continuing across the UK, a gardening expert has shared advice on protecting lawns from heat damage. Chris Bonnett, founder of GardeningExpress, recommends clearing garden furniture and children's play equipment from the grass.
Move garden items to prevent damage
Items left on the lawn for long periods, such as paddling pools, trampolines and toys, can block sunlight and trap moisture. This leads to yellow patches and increases the risk of fungal disease. Moving them regularly and storing them on a patio or hard surface helps keep the lawn healthy.
Water deeply and less often
Frequent shallow watering is ineffective during warm weather as moisture evaporates quickly. Deep watering ensures moisture penetrates the soil, encouraging deeper root growth. Water early morning or evening when temperatures are cooler to reduce evaporation.
Mow higher for better resilience
Keeping grass slightly longer than in winter helps retain moisture and shields the soil. Higher blades also provide more surface area for photosynthesis, helping the lawn withstand heat and drought.
Stay on top of weeding
Weeds compete with grass for nutrients. Removing them promptly gives the lawn a better chance of thriving during summer.
