Around 125 firefighters and 20 fire engines have been called to a grass fire near Carshalton Road in Mitcham, with huge plumes of black smoke rising over south London.
Crews from Mitcham, Wallington, Norbury and surrounding stations are at the scene. The blaze is producing a significant amount of smoke, and residents in the area have been urged to keep their windows and doors closed.
More than 70 calls received
London Fire Brigade control officers received the first of more than 70 calls at 4.27pm. Firefighters are continuing to work to bring the fire under control.
