The Met Office has issued an amber extreme heat warning covering 51 areas across the UK, with temperatures expected to reach the mid-30s Celsius. The warning will be in effect from 1am on Monday, lasting 46 hours until 11pm on Tuesday night.
Potential Power Cuts and Service Disruptions
According to the Met Office, the extreme heat could cause heat-sensitive systems and equipment to fail, leading to power cuts and loss of other services to homes and businesses. The forecaster stated: "A developing hot spell is expected to peak on Monday and Tuesday and lead to widespread impacts on people and infrastructure."
Temperatures are likely to reach the mid-30s Celsius in many areas, with overnight lows remaining above 20 Celsius, especially in urban areas. The Met Office added that the very high temperatures may continue across a smaller area into the middle of the week, but there is some uncertainty regarding the extent.
Safety Warnings and Precautions
During the previous record-breaking heatwave in late May, 19 people died in water-related incidents. In response, the Mirror launched the 'Save Lives for Sam' campaign to prevent drownings. The Met Office also warned that sea-surface temperatures remain cold, and people heading to the coast should be aware of cold water shock.
Samantha Hughes, National Water Safety Partner at the RNLI, advised: "If you find yourself struggling in the water, remember to Float to Live: tilt your head back so your ears are submerged, relax and control your breathing. You may need to gently use your hands to help you stay afloat." She recommended choosing lifeguarded beaches and swimming between the red and yellow flags.
