The Met Office has issued amber extreme heat warnings for much of the UK, including Liverpool, from Monday June 22 through Thursday June 25, with temperatures widely exceeding 35°C and potentially reaching 38°C. The warnings come as the UK braces for a scorching week that could break the June temperature record of 35.6°C set in Southampton in 1976 and Camden Square in 1957.
Temperature Forecast and Timeline
Temperatures will rise quickly on Monday morning across much of the UK and continue to increase throughout the week. The heat will intensify on Tuesday, with the peak expected on Wednesday and Thursday, when temperatures could climb to 38°C. By Friday, conditions are forecast to cool down, with highs of 33°C.
Liverpool has been placed under two amber warning alerts for extreme heat on Wednesday and Thursday. Wednesday is forecast to reach 32°C, while Thursday is expected to be the hottest day of the week, with temperatures hitting 35°C.
Health Impacts and Advice
The amber warning flags potential health impacts for vulnerable people and heat-related issues for the wider population, as well as a possible increase in water safety incidents. The Met Office advises people in alert areas to drink plenty of fluids, keep out of the sun, and avoid exercising between 11am and 3pm.
Separate amber heat health alerts have been issued by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) covering most of England from Monday morning until Friday night. A UKHSA yellow heat alert is also in place for north-east England during the same period.
Expert Commentary
Met Office Deputy Chief Forecaster Tom Crabtree said: "The forecast heatwave is developing into an impactful severe weather event, with record breaking June temperatures and very high humidity. The combination of heat and humidity will be oppressive and bring impacts across society from public health and infrastructure, to power and water supplies."
Mr Crabtree added: "As well as very high daytime temperatures, there will be consecutive nights where temperatures do not drop below 20°C, which is called a Tropical Night. This will make it very hard for people to recover from the daytime heat, exacerbating the heat stress impacts."
BBC Weather Forecast for Liverpool
In the BBC Weather forecast for Tuesday to Thursday in Liverpool, it said: "Remaining hot or very hot and humid through the middle of the week. There will be extensive spells of sunshine and it will be largely dry throughout."
