The Met Office has issued a three symptom alert for people in Wales as a hot spell is expected to affect millions next week. Temperatures could reach up to 34°C, causing health risks such as dehydration, nausea, and fatigue.

Amber Alert for Extreme Heat

The rare amber alert, the most serious in four years, will be in effect from 1am on Monday June 22 to 23:59pm on Tuesday June 23. It covers parts of Wales, the Midlands, and southern England, with temperatures peaking at around 34°C on Monday and Tuesday.

Health Impacts and Symptoms

The Met Office warns that the wider population may experience adverse health effects, including sunburn, heat exhaustion, and other heat-related illnesses. Key symptoms of heat exhaustion include dehydration, nausea, and fatigue.

Dehydration Symptoms

Dehydration symptoms vary between adults and children. In adults, signs include feeling thirsty, headache, dizziness, dark yellow urine, and a dry mouth. In babies, symptoms may include sunken eyes, fewer wet nappies, and drowsiness.

Advice for Staying Cool

The Met Office advises:

  • Keep out of the sun between 11am and 3pm
  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Close curtains in rooms facing the sun
  • If going outside, take water and stay in the shade
  • Use sun cream and wear a broad-brimmed hat

Potential transport disruptions and power cuts are also possible. Some changes in working practices may be required.
