Met Office Issues '5 Second' Warning to All Dog Owners This Weekend
Met Office Issues 5-Second Warning to Dog Owners

The Met Office has issued a warning to all dog owners this weekend, advising them of a 'five second rule' as heatwave conditions return to the UK. Temperatures are expected to reach 30°C on Friday, June 19, and climb to 33°C by Monday, with plenty of hot weather between 30°C and 32°C over the weekend.

Five-Second Tarmac Test

The Met Office, in partnership with the British Veterinary Association, has highlighted the importance of the 'five second rule' for walking dogs. Pet owners are urged to place the back of their hand on the pavement for five seconds; if it feels too hot for them, it is too hot for their dog's paws.

Advice for Pet Owners

  • Ensure pets have constant access to fresh water, adequate ventilation, and shade from direct sunlight.
  • Avoid exercising dogs during the hottest parts of the day, particularly older pets, flat-faced breeds, or those with heart or lung conditions. Stick to early morning or late evening walks.
  • Consider pet-safe sun cream for cats and dogs with lighter-coloured or finer fur, especially on ear tips prone to sunburn.
  • Contact a vet immediately if concerned about a pet's health.

Heatwave Forecast

The Met Office forecast predicts maximum temperatures of 32°C on Friday in East Anglia, 28°C on Saturday as warm air temporarily shifts away, 32°C in the south and southeast of England on Sunday, and a potential 33°C in the same areas on Monday.

Households are also advised to keep homes cool and stay indoors between 11am and 3pm until Monday. Additional tips include pouring boiling water in wheelie bins on Saturday to reduce odours and pests during the heat.
