Met Office Urges 148 UK Areas to Charge Phones Amid Extreme Heat Warnings
Met Office: Charge Phones in 148 UK Areas as Heat Hits 40C

The Met Office has issued rare warnings for extreme heat across 148 UK areas, urging residents to prepare for potential power cuts and danger to life. Amber and red warnings are in effect from Monday, June 22, through Thursday, June 24, covering much of England, Wales, and parts of Scotland. Temperatures are forecast to reach an unprecedented 40C in London on Wednesday, with hot conditions persisting day and night.

Red and Amber Warnings Issued for 148 Areas

The Met Office upgraded its warning to a top-level red alert for 50 areas, including London, the South East, East of England, and parts of Wales. The red warning is in place from 9am Wednesday to 9pm Thursday. An amber warning covers 90 additional areas, including the Midlands, North West England, and Yorkshire, from midnight Wednesday to midnight Thursday. The forecaster warned that the extreme heat could cause "heat-sensitive systems and equipment" to fail, leading to power cuts and loss of water, electricity, gas, or mobile phone services.

Power Cuts and Health Risks

The Met Office stated: "Hot and humid weather is expected to continue through the middle of the week, with exceptionally warm temperatures both day and night. Population-wide adverse health effects are likely to be experienced, not limited to those most vulnerable to extreme heat, leading to potential serious illness or danger to life." The warning also highlighted that "substantial changes in working practices and daily routines likely to be required" and that failure of heat-sensitive systems could lead to power outages and disruption to essential services.

Advice for Residents

To mitigate the risks, the Met Office advised: "Keep yourself safe by following these simple steps to reduce the likelihood of the heat making you feel unwell; drink plenty of fluids, keep out of the sun and avoid any exercise between 11am-3pm when the sun is strongest and close curtains in rooms that face the sun. If you are going out take water with you, stay in the shade, wear sunscreen and a wide brimmed hat." Additionally, they recommended preparing for power cuts by gathering torches, batteries, and a mobile phone power pack.

The Met Office also noted: "People cope better with power cuts when they have prepared for them in advance. It’s easy to do; consider gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items."
