March Shatters Records as Most Abnormally Hot Month in US History
March Sets Record as Most Abnormally Hot Month in US

Federal meteorologists have announced that March 2026 has shattered historical records, becoming the most abnormally hot month ever documented for the continental United States in 132 years of comprehensive weather data collection. This unprecedented heat event, characterised by persistent and intense unseasonable warmth, has raised significant concerns among climate scientists and environmental experts.

Unprecedented Temperature Anomalies

According to data released by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), March's average temperature reached a staggering 50.85 degrees Fahrenheit (10.47 degrees Celsius). This represents a remarkable 9.35°F (5.19°C) above the established 20th century normal for March, easily surpassing the previous record of 8.9°F (4.9°C) set in March 2012.

What makes this particularly alarming is that this temperature deviation marks the most abnormally hot month on record for the Lower 48 states, regardless of the specific month of the year. The average maximum temperature for March was especially elevated, measuring 11.4°F (6.3°C) above the 20th century average and nearly a full degree warmer than the typical daytime high for April.

A Disturbing Pattern Emerges

This record-breaking March continues a troubling trend that has been accelerating in recent years. Analysis reveals that six of the nation's top ten most abnormally hot months have occurred within the last decade alone. February 2026, which registered 6.57°F (3.65°C) above the 20th century normal, ranked as the tenth highest above-normal month in recorded history.

Climate Central meteorologist Shel Winkley expressed grave concern about these developments, stating: "What we experienced in March across the United States was unprecedented. One reason that's so concerning is just the sheer volume of records, all-time records that were set and broken during that time period."

Record-Shattering Scale

The magnitude of this heat event becomes even more apparent when examining daily temperature records. Meteorologist Guy Walton, who specialises in analysing NOAA data, reported that more than 19,800 daily temperature records were broken for heat across the country during March.

Winkley further emphasised the continuity of this worrying pattern: "This is coming on the heels of what was the worst snow year and the hottest winter of record. So we're seeing this continuation of extraordinary heat that took place during the winter months, continuing into the spring months as well. That's where it's really concerning—it's just the duration of this heat."

Looking Ahead with Concern

Climate scientists are particularly troubled by what the coming months might bring. Some meteorological forecasts predict that a brewing El Niño weather pattern could reach superstrength in the next year or so, potentially turning the dial up on global warmth even further.

This combination of record-breaking heat, diminishing snow years, and the prospect of intensified El Niño conditions creates a perfect storm of climate concerns that experts say requires urgent attention and action from policymakers and the public alike.
