London's Last Barbecue-Friendly Parks Ban Grilling Amid Extreme Wildfire Threat
London Parks Ban Barbecues Amid Extreme Wildfire Threat

Camden Council, the only London council that still permitted barbecuing in its parks, has announced a ban on outdoor grilling at the last remaining spots: Cantelowes Gardens, Russell Square, and Lincoln's Inn Fields. The decision to 'close its barbecue season' comes as the London Fire Brigade (LFB) upgraded the wildfire risk from 'elevated' to 'extreme', warning Londoners against using disposable barbecues both at home and in open spaces.

No Barbecue Zones Left in Central London

With this ban, Londoners are now limited to using electric hotplates at Paradise Park in Islington and Burgess Park in Southwark, or one of two barbecue stands at Roundshaw Park in Sutton. Camden Council had previously resisted permanent bans at Waterlow Park last year but was forced to suspend barbecues in July after crowds of revellers overwhelmed the park.

Wildfire Risk and Recent Incidents

The LFB warned that dry grass from hot weather can cause wildfires to start and spread quickly, endangering people, wildlife, and homes. The majority of wildfires are caused by human behaviour, according to the LFB. London has seen two wildfires over the last four days, both trackside at Tube stations in Walthamstow and Stratford.

Climate Change and Future Threats

Experts have warned that wildfires are likely to become more frequent in London due to climate change. It remains unclear whether Camden's ban is permanent or temporary.
