A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Indonesia on Friday night, prompting an early tsunami warning. The tremor hit at 10.58pm local time, 68 kilometres north-northwest of Ende, at a depth of 10 kilometres, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
Tsunami Warning Issued
Following the quake, Indonesia's Weather, Climate, and Earthquake Information office (BMKG) issued an early tsunami warning. The initial tremor was followed by at least two other powerful quakes, with magnitudes of 5.9 and 5.6, all off the northern coast of Sikka.
Early Reports of Damage
Early reports on social media suggest several buildings were damaged, including a hotel in Ruteng. The quake struck not far from the coast, a region visited by thousands of British tourists every year.
