An illegal 7,500-tonne waste dump has been discovered just yards away from Valley Parade, the former Premier League stadium now home to League One side Bradford City. Drone footage reveals household and commercial rubbish strewn across a 50-metre strip of land off Midland Road in Manningham. The site includes large towers of trash piled in and around hundreds of black bin bags, as well as the back end of an articulated lorry and rusting containers.
Residents Complain of Overpowering Stench
Local residents reported the site two weeks ago after a strong rotten smell emanated from the area during a recent heatwave. One anonymous resident said: "This issue came to light when we had the recent heatwave and the local area was overcome by a disgusting smell of rotten foods and waste. We were not able to leave windows or doors open due to the disgusting and pungent smell." The resident also noted seeing "strange" trucks entering the land and disposing of waste.
Environment Agency Investigation Underway
The Environment Agency has launched an investigation into the waste site and is working to track down those responsible. The agency is examining the scale of the dumping and potential environmental impact. Local councillors condemned the fly-tipping, stating: "This is completely unacceptable and represents a blatant disregard for our community and the environment. We will not tolerate anyone treating our community as a dumping ground. Illegal waste dumping, in any form or on any scale, has no place in Manningham."
Impact on Community and Environment
The dump, estimated to contain 7,500 tonnes of waste, poses health and environmental risks. The rotten food and mixed waste attract pests and produce leachate, which can contaminate soil and water. The site's proximity to a major sports venue also raises concerns for public health and safety. The Environment Agency urges anyone with information to come forward as they continue their investigation.
