The Met Office has issued an amber 'extreme heat' warning for Greater Manchester and large parts of the UK from Monday, June 22, to Thursday, June 25. Temperatures in Greater Manchester are forecast to reach as high as 38C, peaking on Thursday afternoon.
Amber Heat Alert Details
The amber alert for Greater Manchester comes into effect at 12am on Wednesday, June 24, and remains in place until 11:59pm on Thursday, June 25. The Met Office warning states: "Hot and humid weather is expected to continue through the middle of the week, with exceptionally warm temperatures both day and night."
Daytime temperatures are widely expected to exceed 30C, with the hottest areas potentially peaking around 38C. Overnight temperatures are unlikely to fall much lower than the high teens Celsius, with some places not dropping below 20 or 21C. High humidity will accompany these high temperatures.
Red 'Risk to Life' Alert for Other Regions
A rare red 'risk to life' alert has also been issued for parts of the West Midlands, Wales, south west England, London, south east England, east of England, and East Midlands. This alert comes into effect at 9am on Wednesday, June 24, and remains until 9pm on Thursday, June 25. The Met Office's red warning describes an "exceptional spell of hot and humid weather" with impacts to the general population highly likely.
UKHSA Heat-Health Alerts
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued heat-health alerts for the whole of England. An amber alert is in force for Greater Manchester and the north west, with significant impacts expected across health and social care services, including a rise in deaths, increased demand on services, and issues managing medicines.
Forecast Peak Temperatures
According to the Met Office forecast, Greater Manchester is expected to hit 38C on Thursday, June 25. Met Office weather maps show temperatures reaching 37C at 4pm on that day. Meanwhile, London is set to reach 39C or even 40C on the same day. The Met Office adds that cooler conditions may begin to become established from the west after this period, but confidence is low.
