UK Town Grantham Fury Over Asylum Seeker Data Accuracy Claims
Grantham Asylum Seeker Data Accuracy Row Escalates

Concerns have escalated in the UK town of Grantham over the alleged failure of the Home Office to provide accurate data regarding asylum seekers housed in the area. Lincolnshire Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Marc Jones, an Independent, has accused the government department of supplying inconsistent information to local authorities and the police.

Data Discrepancies Raise Alarm

Speaking at a Lincolnshire Police and Crime Panel meeting on June 12, PCC Jones stated that the Home Office appears to be sharing different sets of data about asylum seekers in Grantham with Lincolnshire Police and South Kesteven District Council (SKDC). He emphasized that while the police are doing their utmost with the information they have, the discrepancies create significant challenges.

"The bit where I think it breaks down is the fact that it's clear to me – and these are my words, not the chief's – it doesn't appear the same information is being given to local government and policing," Jones said. "And yet both parties are being told they can't discuss what they know with the other."

Jones described this situation as "intolerable," arguing that it undermines community safety and the well-being of asylum seekers themselves. He stressed the importance of having accurate data on the number of properties, occupants, and their backgrounds to ensure proper protection and security.

Call for National Change

The PCC further called for national-level reforms to address the issue, noting that local partners are working to present a unified front to ministers. "That is something that we're working on with local government partners, representations being made to ministers and to others to try to make sure that there's one version of the truth – and it is the truth," he added.

Jones highlighted that whether the discrepancies stem from mistake or conspiracy, the outcome is unacceptable. "Because, whether it's [a mistake] or conspiracy, there are definitely differences in the information being provided and that is not acceptable," he said.

Home Office Denies Allegations

A Home Office spokesperson rejected the claims, asserting that information is shared regularly with all relevant partners. "We don't recognise this assessment," the spokesperson said. "Information is shared regularly with all relevant partners, in line with their roles and responsibilities, ensuring action is taken to protect the safety and security of local communities."

SKDC has previously voiced concerns about the disproportionate number of asylum seekers placed in Grantham compared to other parts of Lincolnshire. The council has called for a more equitable distribution of asylum accommodation across the region.

The row continues as local officials demand transparency and accurate data to ensure the safety and integration of asylum seekers in the community.
