A formal inquest has opened into the tragic drowning of a teenage girl who lost her life just one day before her 14th birthday. Palwasha Akbar, from Bradford, died on May 31 after getting into difficulty in the water at a popular riverside destination near Bolton Abbey.
The 13-year-old was swimming in the River Wharfe, near Burnsall in North Yorkshire, during the late-May heatwave. During a brief five-minute hearing on Thursday, Assistant North Yorkshire Coroner Alison Norton confirmed that the provisional cause of death has been established as drowning.
Inquest Details
"Palwasha Akbar was at Bolton Abbey – more specifically Burnsall – on May 31, 2026, when she got into some difficulty in the water," Ms. Norton stated. "She was retrieved from the water and taken to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary, where she was later confirmed deceased."
Akbar, who was born in Pakistan on June 1, 2012, had travelled to the area with her family. Relatives previously shared that the outing was intended to be a celebratory family barbecue ahead of her milestone birthday.
Ongoing Investigation
The coroner has adjourned the proceedings to a date yet to be determined while further investigations take place. Palwasha’s death highlights a mounting safety concern across the UK, as she was one of at least 17 individuals who tragically lost their lives in open-water incidents during the severe heatwave at the end of May.
Emergency services and water safety charities have repeatedly warned the public about the hidden dangers of open water, including strong currents and cold-water shock, even during periods of extreme heat.
Family Tribute
In a statement released following the tragedy, Palwasha’s family expressed their profound grief, describing her as "a bright, kind, and caring young girl whose tragic passing has left her family, friends, and community heartbroken."
"Palwasha will be remembered for her kindness, her beautiful spirit, her devotion to her friends and family, and the happiness she brought to those around her," the statement read. "Her life was taken far too soon, but her memory will live on forever in the hearts of everyone who loved her."
