With the UK experiencing scorching temperatures in recent weeks, lawns can quickly become parched and damaged. Horticulturist Chris Bonnett, founder of GardeningExpress, has shared essential tips to maintain a healthy lawn during heatwaves.
Move garden items off the grass
Bonnett recommends relocating items such as garden furniture, paddling pools, trampolines, and children's toys that are sitting on the lawn. "Garden items such as paddling pools, trampolines and children's toys left on the lawn for long periods can block sunlight and trap moisture, leading to yellow patches and increasing the risk of fungal disease," he explained. "Moving them regularly and storing them on a patio or hard surface when not in use will help keep your lawn healthy and green."
Proper watering technique
Understanding how to water your lawn effectively is crucial during summer. Shallow, frequent watering is ineffective as moisture evaporates quickly. Bonnett advises: "Water deeply and less often so the moisture penetrates the soil and encourages deeper root growth. For the best results, water early in the morning or later in the evening when temperatures are cooler and evaporation is reduced."
Mow at a higher setting
Keeping grass slightly longer than in winter helps retain moisture and protects the soil. Taller grass also provides more surface area for photosynthesis, enabling the lawn to generate energy to withstand heat and dry conditions. Adjust mower blades to a higher setting.
Control weeds
Weeds compete with grass for vital nutrients. Removing them gives the lawn a stronger chance to thrive during hot weather.
