A devastating fire swept through a children's mini zoo in Hertfordshire early Wednesday morning, killing every animal inside the building. Firefighters were called to The Jungle Box, a soft play centre and mini zoo located in Watermill Industrial Estate in Buntingford, after a 'significant fire' was reported at approximately 3:19 am.
Animals Lost in the Blaze
The fire claimed the lives of meerkats, owls, genets, iguanas, giant tortoises, and a 16-foot snake. Ten fire engines and an aerial ladder platform were deployed to bring the fire under control, with smoke visible billowing into the air.
No Human Casualties
Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that no people were injured, but all animals present in the building at the time of the fire perished. Assistant Chief Fire Officer Darren Cook stated: 'In the early hours of the morning we received calls to a significant fire at The Jungle Box in Buntingford. Crews worked hard to contain the fire and prevent it spreading to neighbouring units.'
Community Impact and Investigation
Residents living nearby were advised to keep windows and doors shut, and road closures were implemented on Aspenden Road and London Road. An investigation into the cause of the fire is currently underway. The Jungle Box, described as a 'fun-filled jungle-themed indoor soft play' with slides and tunnels, also features a mini zoo and a dedicated area for children under five.
Metro has contacted The Jungle Box for comment. The incident has shocked the local community, with many expressing grief over the loss of the animals.
