Cleaning expert Courtney, who posts on Instagram as @courtney.onpurpose, recommends replacing vinegar with hypochlorous acid for deep cleaning sink drains, describing it as the "most underrated non-toxic disinfectant."
Why Switch from Vinegar?
Kitchen sinks can harbour more bacteria than a toilet seat. Food debris, meat residue, and dampness create an ideal breeding ground for bacteria, and this area is often overlooked during routine cleaning. Courtney explained in her video caption that typical commercial cleaning products are "full of harmful fumes and chemicals that you are inhaling," adding that she used them all until she learned a safer and "just as effective (may I say better)" method.
The Expert's Cleaning Method
Courtney outlined her method for cleaning sinks and drains. First, scrub with dish soap, then sprinkle baking soda and scrub or wipe before rinsing. Next, pour half a cup of citric acid and half a cup of baking soda down the drain with hot water and let it fizz. Finally, spray hypochlorous acid, let it sit for two minutes, then wipe and dry completely.
Versatile and Affordable
Hypochlorous acid is reasonably priced, with 500ml costing £5.99 from HOCL. Courtney noted that it "kills bacteria and viruses without any harsh chemicals, no fumes, and it is completely safe around your kids and pets." The acid can also be used on worktops, cushions, and throw pillows, and some hypochlorous products can even be applied to skin.
