Denton pub marks 230 years with a history of mining and beer

The Fletcher Arms on Stockport Road in Denton is marking its 230th year in existence this year, but it has not always been known by that name. The pub began life in 1796 as the Waggon and Horses and has had a varied history since then. Earlier this year, it was recognised for the quality of its pints in the Robinsons Brewery's Best in Glass awards, receiving a certificate for Beer Excellence.

A family business since 2002

The pub has been run by the Almond family since 2002, when Doug Almond took it on with his children Vicki and James, forming Almond Family Pubs. Nearly 25 years later, the family runs five pubs around Stockport and Tameside, with the Fletchers as the starting point. General Manager Sarah Crawford spoke about the pub's history, famous guests, and its place in the community.

From Waggon and Horses to Fletchers Arms

The building dates back to 1796, when Denton was a mining area and Denton Colliery stood just across Stockport Road. The pit was owned by the Fletcher family, who also owned the pub building. Jacob Fletcher, who ran the colliery, died in 1857. Local historians believe the pub was renamed the Fletchers Arms around that time, during landlord John Shelmerdine's tenure, to honour the family. The colliery closed in 1929, but the name has remained, keeping over 150 years of Denton's mining heritage alive.

Best-sellers and famous guests

Lager is the pub's best-selling drink, as is common in most pubs. This summer, Spritz proved popular, with the team struggling to make them fast enough on sunny afternoons. The pub has also welcomed Ricky Hatton, described as a true local hero and always down to earth.

Community and ghostly tales

Crawford praised the local community, noting that some families have been coming for generations, with children of regulars now bringing their own children for Sunday carvery. She highlighted the annual charity walk and Thursday night quiz as community staples. Regarding hauntings, the pub's cleaners often report hearing loud banging when the building is empty, though whether it is old pipes or a former landlord remains open to interpretation.

Crawford encouraged people to support their local pub by simply coming in, noting that every pint, Sunday lunch, and birthday booking makes a difference. She added that leaving a good review, following on social media, and joining in with quizzes and events all help. The Fletcher Arms is located at 445 Stockport Rd, Denton, M34 6EG.
