Firefighters are continuing to battle a wildfire in Blaenavon that now covers more than 200 hectares, the equivalent of around 300 football pitches. The blaze, which has been burning since Sunday evening, has sent smoke across South Wales, affecting communities tens of miles away.
Smoke Spreads Across South Wales
After a change in wind direction on Monday night, residents in Caerphilly, Cardiff and Newport woke to the smell of smoke on Tuesday. South Wales Fire and Rescue Service (SWFRS) advised those in affected areas to shut their windows and doors.
In an update on Tuesday evening, SWFRS warned two communities — Nantyglo and Brynmawr — that they are likely to be affected by smoke as the evening continues. The fire service is reminding anyone impacted to close their windows and doors until the smoke disperses.
Firefighters Battle 5km Front
Drone footage captured on Tuesday revealed the extent of the wildfire, which has destroyed a large area of mixed land including fern, gorse and bracken. The fire service said its crews were battling a 5km front, working in challenging conditions due to terrain, access and wind.
Specialist officers are using tactical burns to manage the spread of the wildfire, with support from local farmers cutting fire breaks. Other equipment being used includes 4x4 vehicles, drones and i-cutters to manage vegetation.
SWFRS thanked partner agencies including Natural Resources Wales, Public Health Wales, local authorities, health boards and police for their co-operation and support.
Public Urged to Stay Away
The fire service has urged people to stay away from the area to allow emergency crews to work safely. It also asked the public not to call 999 simply to report the smell or sight of smoke unless they believe they have spotted a separate fire. The wildfire remains ongoing.
