A refuse collector has shared a simple technique to help keep maggots and flies out of wheelie bins, though he cautions it requires something that "some people don't want to do".
Maggots are among the last things anyone wishes to discover wriggling around inside their wheelie bin. However, they can swiftly become a persistent problem for households, especially in warmer weather as flies grow more active and food waste breaks down more rapidly, producing stronger smells that attract them.
Tips from The No1 Binman
Binman and content creator The No1 Binman posted several tips on Instagram. Beginning his recommendations, he said: "To start with, if you got some smelly food, double-bag it. And once you have double-bagged it, make sure you squeeze the air out of it, make sure it's tied tight, and then put it in your bin."
For his second suggestion, the refuse collector advised householders to keep their wheelie bin out of direct sunlight. He noted that warm weather heats up your wheelie bin, which draws more flies because of the odour. Where feasible, place your bins in a shaded area or "anywhere you can" such as under a chair. He noted that the sole exception is on collection day, when you must put it out at the front of your property.
Freezer trick and reactions
He also recommended keeping the lid of your wheelie bin securely closed. The binman explained: "If the flies can't get in there, they can't lay the maggots to then be in the bin. Lastly, some people don't want to do this, but it's a possibility if you can. Put the food waste in the freezer, and then on bin day, put it in your bin."
Viewers of the video responded in large numbers, offering their opinions on his recommendations. One person wrote: "Food waste in our freezer WTF nah." Another said: "No way am I putting food waste in my [damn] fridge."
However, surprisingly, a number of people disclosed they have been employing the freezer technique for years with positive results. One individual shared: "Food waste in bags in the freezer until bin day... WORKS!!" Another commented: "I have done the freezer trick for years and it works a treat."
Alternative method
To stop flies and maggots from taking over your bin, place some vinegar-soaked bread at the bottom. It is also recommended to bag your rubbish properly to keep your bin hygienic. The strong smell of vinegar can repel flies, while keeping food waste in sealed bags can make your bin less attractive to them in the first place.
