A refuse collector has revealed the real reason why binmen inspect your wheelie bins before emptying them.
Recycling rules and fire risks
Ashley, who shares advice on his TikTok account, explained that while general waste gets less scrutiny, recycling bins must be checked due to strict regulations. He said: "Recycling, on the other hand, has to be the correct stuff."
The binman highlighted that incorrect disposal can pose serious fire hazards, particularly when items like vapes are dumped in recycling bins filled with paper. "There could be fires in the back of the lorry," Ashley warned.
Financial impact of contamination
There's also a significant financial reason for the inspections, as contaminated recycling loads cost councils money rather than generating income. Ashley explained: "The council has to pay more if we take a lot of contaminated bins."
Gedling Borough Council revealed that just 5% of contaminated waste can cause an entire lorry load to be rejected from recycling centres. When this happens, all the recyclable materials end up being incinerated instead of recycled.
