A binman has shared advice on how to stop maggots from taking over wheelie bins, warning that one common household item can draw the pests. Ashley, who posts tips on his No.1 Binman account, urged households to dispose of pet food carefully.
Where to put pet food
Many households have several bins, including general rubbish, recycling, and food waste. Ashley suggested placing any leftover cat or dog food in the food waste bin.
He added: "As long as it is only the food. The packaging itself can't be recycled, and it wouldn't go with it in the food waste bin. It wouldn't go in the recycling if it is a pouch; it would go in the general waste bin."
Ashley advised households to check with their local authority to see which regulations are in force, as they differ by location. He said: "Your council may be different, do check. But most councils will let you put your dog or cat food waste in the food waste bin."
How to bin pet food so it doesn't attract maggots
Pet food tends to attract maggots due to its typically pungent smell and high moisture levels. When left in pet bowls, flies can deposit their eggs onto the food before it is disposed of. If these eggs go unnoticed and the food is transferred into a bin, maggots can emerge rapidly and multiply.
Ashley advised wrapping the pet food in small bags prior to putting it in the food bin to keep everything contained. He explained: "Make sure you put it in a bag before you put it in, because that will stink. You will get maggots for days. So, bag it up and put it in a compostable bag and in your food waste bin."
The binman stressed: "Make sure you put it out every single week, otherwise you will get the maggots and the smells. It is not worth it."
