A worried BBC Breakfast guest admitted 'we don't know when we're going home' after a 'major incident' was declared in Conwy, Wales, on Monday. The news programme reported that firefighters have been tackling multiple fires overnight throughout North Wales as emergency services combat wildfires across the UK.
On terrain parched by recent hot weather and flames fanned by 30 mile per hour winds, the blaze rapidly spread, necessitating the evacuation of dozens of homes. BBC Breakfast interviewed several residents who had been evacuated from the vicinity.
Residents Describe Panic and Uncertainty
One guest told the show: 'Our dogs started barking madly at about quarter to six this morning and I could smell burning. I leapt out of bed and realised that obviously something was going on, but the whole area now up there is an evacuation zone and we don't know when we're going home,' reports the Mirror.
Another guest remarked: 'Around six o'clock in the morning, we had a knock at the door and I'm like, "Who's at the door at six o'clock in the morning?" And there was a police officer and I looked outside and I'd just seen the smoke and I thought, "Alright, yeah." He said, "close all your windows because obviously we've got a bit of a situation."'
A different guest added: 'Two hours later, there was another knock on the door saying, "Pack a bag, you may have to just leave." And that to me hit home then because it's, "Well, how serious is this? What do I put in my bag?"'
Firefighters Battle Multiple Blazes
In the studio, presenter Jon Kay remarked: 'Firefighters have been dealing with several fires overnight across North Wales. A major incident was declared after a wildfire on Conwy Mountain and dozens of people evacuated from a nearby village. Neighbouring communities have been urged to close their windows and doors and to avoid affected areas.'
Sally Nugent added: 'Really challenging time for people living around there at the moment' as the programme showed a clear satellite image displaying the scale of the fire. BBC Breakfast continues at 6am on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
