Bangkok has been declared a flood disaster area after almost two days of heavy rain left homes, shops and roads waterlogged, with residents wading through waist-deep water.
The Thai capital recorded 300mm of rainfall over 48 hours through Saturday in some areas, flooding roads and leaving some cars submerged. The rain swelled the city's network of canals, sending murky water into surrounding homes, restaurants and shops.
Disaster Declared in All 50 Districts
Authorities declared a disaster in all 50 of Bangkok's districts. Continuous rainfall since Thursday has flooded shops and homes across the capital.
Photographs show people wading through flood waters near a petrol station, vehicles submerged along Phetchaburi Road, and a woman walking through flood waters in front of a bus. A man inspects the damage at his flooded home, while others remove water from a shop that was already sandbagged to protect it.
Rainy Season Peak
September is the peak of the rainy season in Bangkok, but this month has been wetter than usual. Parts of the city recorded as much as 300mm of rain in two days.
