British Gas has shared six simple, cost-free techniques to keep your home cool during a heatwave, emphasizing that no purchases are necessary for most methods. With parts of Britain experiencing high temperatures, these tips are crucial for families with children and pets.
Close Curtains and Windows During the Hottest Hours
According to British Gas, it is tempting to open windows during a heatwave, but keeping them shut when the day is at its hottest will maintain cooler indoor temperatures. They recommend letting in air only early or late in the day.
Create a Cooling Effect with Simple Tricks
To cool a room with a fan, place a deep dish of ice in front of it to chill the breeze. Alternatively, angle a box fan outwards through an open window in the evening to expel hot air rather than circulating it.
Encourage Air Flow
Shutting off unused rooms throughout the day helps keep the house cool. Opening internal doors when windows are open in the evening promotes air circulation. British Gas explains: "A good strategy is to open windows on opposite sides of your home in the early morning or late evening when the outdoor temperature is lower. This encourages airflow by letting warm air escape and be replaced by cooler air." For flats with windows on only one side, open internal doors and use a fan to move air.
Install Reflective Window Film
Reflective window film is an inexpensive and "super effective" way to keep your home cool. British Gas notes it can cut heat and glare by up to 99% and can be self-installed. Some households have even used tin foil as a substitute.
Make Clever Use of Extractor Fans
Extractor fans in bathrooms and kitchens can double as cooling tools. By opening internal doors and running the fans after cooking or showering, you create airflow to remove warm air. British Gas advises: "Open windows and vents elsewhere so fresh cooler air can replace the warm air expelled by the extractor fan."
Keep Yourself Cool
Taking a lukewarm shower lowers body temperature while saving energy. After showering, wear loose, lightweight garments made from natural fabrics to help regulate body temperature. Loose-fitting clothes catch any breeze, keeping you comfortable.
