A gardening expert has shared the best time to give your lawn its final cut of the season, with the precise date varying across UK regions. Craig Wilson, in-house gardening expert at Gardeners Dream, says the key is to mow before temperatures drop to seven degrees Celsius or lower, as that is the point at which grass growth significantly slows.
Regional Deadlines for the Last Mow
Wilson recommends scheduling that last mow between late October and the end of November, though milder weather this year means it could be pushed back slightly. Current forecasts suggest England, Wales and Northern Ireland won't see temperatures fall to seven degrees until December 8, while Scottish residents face a slightly earlier deadline of December 4.
Wilson said: "To be on the safe side, I would always cut my lawn just before the end of November, even if it's been a mild autumn, just in case the weather decides to change and temperatures drop quicker than previously predicted."
Tips for a Healthy Winter Lawn
Experts at Mammotion also recommend keeping the final cut slightly longer than usual — around four to five centimetres — to insulate the soil and protect the delicate crowns of the grass. Wilson adds that aerating your lawn with a garden fork after the final trim will help prevent waterlogging and compaction over the winter months.
