A cleaning enthusiast has shared a simple 10-minute method to dissolve shower limescale using a natural, eco-friendly kitchen staple. The technique, posted on TikTok, promises to banish stubborn mineral deposits without harsh chemicals.
Why Limescale Forms
Limescale develops when hard water, which contains elevated levels of minerals such as calcium and magnesium, evaporates and deposits those minerals as chalky, white residue. Also known as calcium carbonate, it tends to be more of an issue for those living in hard-water areas.
The Vinegar Method
Cleaning enthusiast Lily, widely recognised on TikTok as Clean with Lily, recommends white vinegar as the solution. Simply soak sheets of kitchen roll in vinegar before placing the dampened tissue directly onto the affected areas. Add more vinegar if necessary, then leave the soaked sheets to sit for approximately 10 minutes.
Once you remove the tissue, the limescale should have vanished entirely. Vinegar is particularly effective at eliminating limescale owing to its acetic acid content, which triggers a chemical reaction that breaks down the alkaline calcium and magnesium compounds forming limescale.
Versatile and Eco-Friendly
The vinegar method dismantles the stubborn mineral crust without causing any harm to the shower's mechanism. It can equally be employed to descale a wide variety of household appliances, proving highly effective at removing chalky limescale deposits from items such as kettles and dishwashers.
Just Descaler noted that vinegar is an excellent option due to its capacity to break down mineral build-up, while also being an environmentally friendly alternative that is not overly abrasive. It wrote: "By using vinegar as a descaler, you can restore the efficiency of your appliances, like coffee makers, kettles, dishwashers, and washing machines, without resorting to harsh chemical cleaners." Not only is vinegar an eco-friendly choice, but it's also safe to use around children and pets.
