Why Vinegar Works Against Ants
Ants typically enter properties through a lone scout that searches for food and shelter before returning to the colony. Once a path is found, hordes follow the pheromone trail into your home, often reaching kitchen cupboards. Summer sees peak ant activity as colonies reach maximum size and August brings reproduction due to warmer temperatures.
Courtney highlighted that while many deterrents exist, "this is one of the easiest sprays you can make that's actually effective and safe." The vinegar is key, as ants detest its smell and it disrupts their scent trails.
How to Make and Apply the Spray
Mix two cups of vinegar with two cups of washing-up liquid in a bowl, then pour into a spray bottle. Apply generously to all entry points, including windows, doorways, skirting boards, and typical ant pathways. Spray thoroughly and evenly for best results.
Courtney reported, "I sprayed this all over my patio, and within 30 minutes, every ant had shrivelled up and disappeared. I haven't seen one since." For ongoing protection, reapply weekly, or every few days if ants reappear, and after rain if the solution is washed away.
