Veterinary surgeon Tom Carter has shared the three dog breeds he would happily own himself, offering guidance for prospective pet owners. In a video posted to Instagram under the handle @Things_can_only_get_vetter, Carter highlighted breeds that suit various households, while noting potential health issues and care needs.
Greyhound: Laid-Back and Affectionate
Carter's first recommendation was the Greyhound, noting that other sighthounds often share similar traits. He explained that many people desire a larger dog but may not have the suitable lifestyle, yet Greyhounds are often more relaxed than expected, content with a quick run or a longer walk. He described them as affectionate but stressed the importance of dental care from the start, as dental issues are common.
Labrador: Family-Friendly with Health Considerations
His second pick was the Labrador. Carter acknowledged the breed's potential health concerns, advising owners to investigate hip and elbow health in the puppy's parentage. Despite these cautions, he suggested Labradors fit well with many families, especially those with space.
Border Terrier: Full of Character
Finally, Carter highlighted the Border Terrier, describing it as full of character and adaptable to various lifestyles without requiring extensive exercise. He noted that the breed tends to face fewer health issues compared to others, adding they are consistently a pleasure to see in practice.
Social Media Reactions
The video, which garnered over 20,000 likes, drew enthusiastic responses. One viewer commented: "Once you adopt a rescued Greyhound, there's no going back." Another said: "Greyhounds make the best pets." A third remarked: "Labrador would be & always would be 1st choice!" Others praised the Border Terrier, with comments like "Absolutely adore my Border Terrier" and "Border terries are the BEST!!"
