Toby Codd visited Bude in Cornwall and was hugely impressed by its quiet, family-friendly atmosphere and stunning beaches. The town, which has won Best UK Coastal Town at the British Travel Awards, offers a relaxed alternative to busier resorts like Newquay and Bournemouth.
Arriving at lunchtime, Codd parked on The Strand and strolled alongside the River Neet before reaching the town centre. The river, which merges with the River Strat and Bude Canal, provides a scenic backdrop for coastal trails.
Peaceful Atmosphere and Independent Shops
The first thing that struck Codd was how quiet and peaceful Bude felt. Unlike many seaside towns, there were no large crowds, giving a relaxed atmosphere. Walking up Belle Vue Lane, he spotted numerous independent cafes and shops. Locals recommend House of Chaplin for the best coffee, while Electric Bakery is a must for pastry lovers. Beau Nidol offers local fused-glass items, Wildwood is a popular lifestyle and gift shop, and Bellini's Deli Kitchen on Queen Street sells fresh vegetables, organic bread, charcuterie, and artisan gins.
Codd noted that Bude's high street is thriving, unlike many UK towns struggling with decreasing footfall and rising costs.
Summerleaze Beach and Bude Sea Pool
After grabbing fish and chips, Codd headed to Summerleaze Beach. The sweeping golden beach features Bude Sea Pool, a part-natural, part-man-made tidal pool built in 1930. Measuring 91 metres by 45 metres, it provides safe swimming away from dangerous Atlantic currents and is free to access with no booking required. The beach also has colourful beach huts available for hire, positioned on raised wooden decking above the sand.
Bude's beaches are popular with surfers, especially Crooklets Beach just north of Summerleaze, known for its consistent west-facing swell. During low tide, Codd walked from Summerleaze to Crooklets, enjoying stunning views of rugged Atlantic shores and dramatic cliffs.
Spectacular Sunsets and Family-Friendly Layout
Thanks to its west-facing location on the North Cornwall coast, Bude offers spectacular sunsets. The expansive beaches never feel crowded, even in summer, making them ideal for families. Unlike some seaside towns with small, cliff-trapped coves, Bude boasts sweeping golden sands. Summerleaze Beach is a short walk from the town centre, allowing easy access to food and drinks.
Codd also appreciated that Bude is flat and compact, making it walkable for elderly visitors and families with buggies, unlike other seaside towns built into steep valleys.
As his visit ended, Codd concluded that Bude is perfectly suited for a family trip, with independent cafes, shops, and a golden beach. He said, "I can't wait to return."
