Jasmine Scarr, 34, and her husband Ross Scarr, 38, sold their £350,000 house and left the UK in May to homeschool their three children in Thailand. The family, along with their two dogs, arrived with just five suitcases to pursue what they describe as a 'slow and simple' way of life.
Why they left
Jasmine, originally from Darlington, County Durham, first fell in love with Thailand as a teenager. The couple felt 'daunted' but decided to sell everything they owned in April. Jasmine says the lack of family time in the UK 'bothered' her, especially since Ross, a welding engineer, worked two hours away.
Now renting a four-bedroom villa for £700 a month with a private pool, garden, and jungle views, Ross can spend more time with the kids. Jasmine believes Thailand is a safer environment for her children and feels 'relieved' to have moved out of Britain.
Homeschooling and new life
Jasmine deregistered her two sons from school in March and now teaches them Maths and English for at least two hours after breakfast. She also teaches her two-year-old daughter Mali ABCs, numbers, colours, and animals. The boys have joined a local football team, and the family hopes they will learn Thai.
Jasmine says homeschooling is a 'better way of learning' because the kids explore temples and learn about Thai culture. She admitted the move was daunting but said, 'This is the best decision we've made.'
Viral TikTok and encouragement
Sharing the move on TikTok, her video captioned 'we did something most people only talk about' has garnered over 48,000 views. Jasmine encourages other families to take the leap, saying, 'We've only got one life so just do it.'
The couple, who now work remotely, are considering starting their own business in Thailand and plan to stay for at least a year.
