From August 15, manufacturers and importers in the UK will no longer be allowed to introduce new batches of products containing the chemical TPO (Trimethylbenzoyl Diphenylphosphine Oxide) to the market. The ban affects gel nail systems that use TPO as a photoinitiator.
Phased Ban on Sales
From February 14 next year, retailers and distributors will be banned from selling or supplying TPO-containing products to technicians or members of the public. The regulations apply across the UK and affect both professional salons and home users.
Health Concerns Behind the Ban
TPO has been reclassified as a Category 1B Reproductive Toxicant (CMR) after research indicated that when rats consumed high concentrations of TPO, it produced adverse effects on fertility and reproductive development. The chemical was also reconfirmed to possess strong skin-sensitising properties, meaning repeated direct contact with uncured gel can trigger allergic reactions.
Any chemical formally classified as a Category 1A or 1B CMR (Carcinogenic, Mutagenic, or Reprotoxic) is automatically prohibited from use in cosmetic products by default.
