Expert Reveals Two Best Times to Water Garden Plants in Summer Heat
Two Best Times to Water Garden Plants in Summer Heat

A gardening expert has shared essential advice for keeping garden plants hydrated during summer heatwaves, emphasising that the timing of watering is critical. TikTok creator Ish, known for his gardening tips, advises watering plants either in the early morning between 7am and 9am or in the evening from 9pm onwards.

Why Timing Matters

Watering at these specific times helps prevent moisture from evaporating too quickly due to cooler ground and air temperatures. This ensures that plants receive adequate hydration, reducing the risk of damage or death from heat stress. The same principle applies to watering lawns.

Ish explained: "Now, what I always tell people is water them in the mornings or evening, it's completely up to you." He noted that while it may seem counterintuitive, watering during the hottest part of the day is not harmful if a plant appears struggling: "But if you do see that one of your plants is struggling throughout the day, then you can water it. It's a common myth that it's going to burn them, it's not a giant magnifying glass with the water droplets, so don't worry."

Additional Tips for Plant Survival

Ish recommends applying water directly to the soil for a thorough drink, which helps plants thrive. For container plants, moving them to shadier spots can assist in retaining soil moisture. Spreading pale-coloured gravel on the soil surface reflects sunlight, preventing overheating and drying out.

Installing a shade screen is another effective method. Ish suggests purchasing one from a DIY shop, garden centre, or online, or using a fitted white sheet as a cost-effective alternative. The screen bounces back sunlight and maintains cooler temperatures underneath. He said: "That way then, I can keep them well-watered in one space; group them close together so if it does get any sunshine, it's not getting directly to the soil which isn't drying out and, as a result, will survive throughout the heatwave."

Conclusion

For plants fixed in the ground, a good morning watering suffices. By following these timing and shading strategies, gardeners can help their plants endure summer heatwaves effectively.
