Toxic Toy Alert: Watchdogs Seize Dangerous Plush Goods

Potentially dangerous and toxic toys have been removed from shelves by consumer watchdogs in North Ayrshire. The Trading Standards team seized approximately £3,500 worth of goods that posed health risks to children.

Seized Items Include Popular Toys

The illicit and counterfeit items taken from several stores include Squishy Fidget Foams, Squishy Buns, Sonny Angel dolls, and KPop Demon Hunters figures. These toys may be toxic and have not been tested against UK safety standards.

Cllr Alan Hill, Cabinet Member for Communities, Housing & Islands, praised the Trading Standards staff for their intervention. He said: “The health risks associated with items such as these are just dreadful for any child who ends up playing with them. I am delighted that these illicit and counterfeit items are now off the shelves.”

Safety Concerns

As well as potential toxicity, the toys lack UK manufacturer or importer addresses, a legal requirement, and do not have the legally required CE or UKCA marks. Some items also smelled strongly of solvent.

Cllr Hill added: “Anyone buying toys for children should look out for signs that they may be counterfeit, including the price being too low, poor printing on packaging, or the missing CE/UKCA mark, along with any other out of the ordinary features, such as unusual or strong smells.”

Other recent seizures by the team included hundreds of fake Labubu dolls, popular among children following the Pop Mart’s The Monsters series.
