Alan Titchmarsh has revealed an effective and cost-free method for eliminating weeds on gravel paths and patios without using chemicals. The technique relies on sunlight and a basic garden hoe to dehydrate and kill weeds quickly.
The Problem with Weeds on Gravel
Weeds flourish in sunny spots like gravel driveways and between patio slabs once they receive sufficient sunlight. Their roots often burrow deep into cracks or compacted soil, making manual removal ineffective as the weeds typically return within a few weeks.
Titchmarsh's Simple Hoe Technique
In an online video, Titchmarsh explained: "What you are trying to do with your Dutch hoe is separate the [weed] from its roots and that way it will cook once it's exposed to sunshine." The method involves running a hoe across the gravel surface to slice through the weeds at their base. The severed weed is left in place, with as much gravel removed from the exposed roots as possible. On a warm day, the sun quickly dehydrates the cut weed, causing it to shrivel and die.
Titchmarsh advised: "Don't try and dig with the hoe. Remember, you're always skimming. The more of the weed root you can expose to the drying rays of the sun, the quicker they will die."
Adapting the Method for Patios
For patio weeds, Titchmarsh recommends using a patio knife instead of a hoe, as hoes are heavy and can chip stone slabs. He said: "When it comes to patios and terraces made of stones...if you do find there's soil between your paving slabs and weeds are growing there, a patio knife is really quite useful." Simply run the knife along the joints, let the weeds drop, and allow sunlight to dry them out.
Benefits and Effectiveness
This approach takes just a few minutes and avoids harsh chemical treatments that can harm the environment and local wildlife. It is a straightforward, efficient way to clear a large number of weeds without manual pulling.
