As temperatures rise and spring begins, rats become more active across the UK, seeking food and shelter in homes and gardens. With poor vision but an exceptional sense of smell, these rodents can be deterred using certain natural scents that they find highly unpleasant.
Cayenne pepper and chilli-based products are potent deterrents. Scattering chilli flakes or cayenne powder near entry points such as pipes, air bricks, drains, and gaps around doors and windows can irritate rats' respiratory systems. For chilli oil, mix with water in a spray bottle and apply to affected areas. Reapply after heavy rain and keep away from pets and children.
Peppermint oil is another effective repellent. Its strong scent disrupts rats' ability to navigate and find food. Soak cotton balls in pure peppermint oil and place them in areas prone to rat activity, such as under kitchen cabinets, near pipes, or in lofts. Replace the oil every few days to maintain potency, and ensure good ventilation in humid conditions.
Citrus scents, particularly those containing limonene found in lemon, orange, and grapefruit rinds, are also highly repellent to rats. Use concentrated citrus oils like lemon or citronella, diluted with water before application. These can be sprayed or placed in areas where rats are active.
While these natural methods can help deter rats, professional pest control is recommended for serious infestations. Always handle these substances with care, especially around children and pets.
