Three Alpacas Arrive at Newcastle's Pets Corner

Three alpacas have become the newest residents at Pets Corner in Jesmond Dene, Newcastle, as part of a series of exciting improvements to the popular petting zoo. The trio, named Gallinious, Vernon, and Firkin, are all around two years old and are settling into their new home.

New Arrivals at Pets Corner

Newcastle City Council announced the arrival of the "three adorable alpacas" on their social media channels, detailing the distinct personalities of each animal. Gallinious, born on 24 April 2024, is the oldest and most confident of the group. This rose grey alpaca loves carrots and has already taken first place as a junior at the Northern Halter Show. Vernon, born on 20 May 2024, is described as a gentle boy with a soft cream fleece and a distinctive brown spot on his side. He is also a big fan of hand-fed carrots. Firkin, born on 13 August 2024, is the youngest and cheekiest member of the group, with a mischievous character and a striking black and brown fleece. The council jokingly calls him a "self-confessed carrot monster."

Community and Educational Benefits

According to Newcastle City Council, "Alpacas are known for their gentle nature, making them fantastic additions to Pets Corner while giving visitors the chance to learn more about animal care, sustainable farming and wildlife from around the world." The warm weather has been ideal for the alpacas, which are native to the Andes in South America. The council also promised that more furry friends will join them soon, stating that "their arrival is just the latest in a series of exciting improvements to Pets Corner, with even more new arrivals, upgraded habitats and visitor experiences coming soon."
