A small seaside town in Suffolk has been declared the food capital of East England, boasting multiple Michelin Guide-listed restaurants and an annual festival celebrating local produce. Consumer guide Which? awarded Snape Maltings the top regional food destination for 2025, granting a full five stars for its culinary offerings after a survey of 8,952 experiences from 3,872 members.
Which? Survey Results
The survey placed Snape Maltings ahead of popular Suffolk rivals such as Southwold. The town's culinary reputation is bolstered by the Aldeburgh Food and Drink Festival, which returns for its 21st anniversary on September 26 and 27 at Snape Maltings, a few miles inland.
Local Dining Highlights
Fish dominates the local dining scene, as expected for a town overlooking the North Sea. The Aldeburgh Fish and Chip Shop is a popular spot, identifiable by its queue. For a premium experience, the Regatta restaurant specializes in seafood and runs its own smokehouse. Carnivores may prefer The Suffolk, the East Anglian offshoot of Soho's L'Escargot, known for outstanding meat and fish dishes at premium prices.
Michelin Guide Recognition
The waterfront Regatta restaurant is listed in the Michelin Guide and received enthusiastic praise from food critic Jay Rayner. "My dinner took me to a whole bunch of very happy places," he wrote for The Guardian.
Peaceful Atmosphere
With a shingle beach and no railway station, the town sees lower footfall than busier Suffolk rivals, allowing diners to enjoy meals in relative peace. Which? awarded it five stars for peace and quiet. Visitors arriving by public transport must take a connecting bus from Saxmundham station.
Other Attractions
Beyond food, the town offers independent shops, art galleries, and boutiques. For outdoor enthusiasts, coastal walks provide sweeping views of multicolored buildings.
