Bananas can turn from green to brown seemingly overnight, but proper storage can keep them fresh for up to three weeks, according to YouTube food storage expert Amy Cross from The Cross Legacy. The key is to store bananas away from other fruits, preferably on a hook.
Keep Bananas Away from Other Produce
Amy Cross advises not to keep bananas in a fruit bowl with apples or oranges, as the ethylene gas they emit causes each other to spoil faster. However, placing bananas near rock-hard avocados can help ripen them. For general storage, bananas should be kept at least three feet away from any other produce, and a hook is the best way to hang them.
Choose Organic for Longer Life
Organic bananas stay fresh longer because they are not sprayed with chemicals that accelerate ripening. Cross notes that if bananas look perfectly yellow and ripe at the store, they are likely to become overripe within days. Organic bananas ripen slower, making them a worthwhile purchase for those who want to enjoy them over a longer period.
Seal the Stems and Open from the Bottom
Sealing the banana stems with plastic wrap or foil stops ethylene gas from spreading, keeping bananas fresher. Cross also demonstrates a surprising technique: opening bananas from the opposite end (the bottom) by pinching it, which is easier than the traditional stem method. If you don't finish a banana, keep the peel on, cut it, and store the remaining piece in a glass jar.
Freeze for Later Use
When bananas start to go bad, Cross recommends freezing them. She cuts them into longer slices and flash freezes them overnight. These frozen slices can be used in smoothies or eaten as a snack after a few minutes at room temperature.

A few years ago, I saw a vid, I think it was in a zoo, and the monkeys were opening the bananas from the other end like you just showed us, I figured then that they were obviously brighter than me, so since then I've been doing the same! and it's far easier."
