Simple Natural Remedy for Wardrobe Mould
Mould in wardrobes can damage clothes and shoes, but a cleaning expert has shared a simple natural remedy using two common household ingredients. TikToker Chantel Mila, known as Mama Mila, revealed that placing uncooked rice in a fabric drawstring bag with a few drops of lemon oil can help absorb excess moisture and prevent mould growth.
Why Mould Grows in Wardrobes
Mould thrives in wardrobes due to a combination of dampness, poor ventilation, and organic materials like clothing. High humidity, condensation on cold surfaces, and damp clothes create ideal conditions for spores to multiply, leading to mould on garments, walls, and shelves. Many households use dehumidifiers, but Chantel's method offers an affordable alternative.
How the Remedy Works
Rice acts as a natural desiccant, drawing moisture from the air. Adding lemon oil not only helps absorb dampness but also keeps the wardrobe smelling fresh. According to DIY expert Tim Warren from Adkwik, humidity levels inside wardrobes should ideally be between 40 and 60%. He told Ideal Home: "Placing these in your wardrobe can help to keep the air dry, reducing the risk of mould growth. You can also buy artificial moisture-absorbing desiccants, such as silica gel packets or charcoal bags."
Additional Tips
Other natural desiccants include baking soda, which can be placed in an open container inside the wardrobe. Chantel urged her followers to "work smarter, not harder" when maintaining their homes. This simple trick can help protect clothing and shoes from costly damage caused by mould.
