How Baking Soda Works on Oven Grease
Baking soda, also known as bicarbonate of soda, is an alkaline compound that effectively breaks down acidic fats and oils. Its abrasive texture helps lift baked-on grime without scratching the oven's interior. Additionally, baking soda absorbs odors, leaving the oven fresh.
Shamsa explained: "A quick, cheap and effective method for cleaning the inside of a dirty oven is to use a homemade baking soda (or bicarbonate of soda) solution. Adding lemon juice or vinegar to the baking soda solution helps to clean the oven even further."
Step-by-Step Cleaning Process
To create the cleaning paste, mix baking soda with a small amount of water until it forms a spreadable consistency. Apply the paste to all interior surfaces of the oven, avoiding heating elements. Leave it to work overnight, or for at least four hours if time is short.
After the waiting period, fill a spray bottle with white vinegar or lemon juice. Spray the solution over the dried paste. The acidic liquid reacts with the baking soda, creating a fizzing action that loosens remaining grease and grime.
Final Wipe Down
Using a clean, damp sponge, wipe away the paste and dissolved grease. For stubborn spots, repeat the spray-and-wipe process. Finally, spray the interior again with vinegar or lemon juice to remove any residue, then dry thoroughly before turning the oven back on.
