Cinnamon: The Kitchen Spice That Keeps Rats at Bay This Winter

As winter chills drive rodents indoors, a common kitchen spice could be the key to keeping them out. Cinnamon, often found in cupboards, has been hailed as a natural deterrent for rats and other pests, thanks to its potent aroma.

Instagram influencer Babs, known as Brunch With Babs, shared the tip with her 3 million followers: 'Cinnamon naturally contains eugenol, an aromatic compound commonly found in traditional insect repellents.' She noted it is equally effective against rodents.

Rats are repelled by cinnamaldehyde, a compound in cinnamon that overwhelms their sensitive noses. Methods include placing cinnamon oil-soaked cotton wool near entry points, sprinkling ground cinnamon in affected areas, or making a DIY spray with cinnamon oil, water, and a carrier substance.

However, experts warn this is not a permanent solution. Rats may adapt to the scent over time, so it should be combined with hygiene measures and professional pest control for severe infestations.
