With another heatwave approaching, temperatures could reach 34C later this week. As Brits turn to fans to stay cool, they may inadvertently invite flies into their homes. According to DIY expert Glen Peskett from Saxton Blades Multi Tools, the way fans are used can actually increase the number of flies indoors.
Why Flies Enter Homes During Hot Weather
Peskett explained: "A lot of people think the best thing to do is open every window and stick a fan on full blast. The trouble is, if you've got your windows wide open in the middle of the day, you're making it much easier for flies to find their way inside." Flies are attracted to smells from fruit, food, or bins, which become stronger during a heatwave.
Simple 5-Minute Change to Keep Flies Out
To keep homes cool and fly-free, Peskett recommends keeping blinds or curtains closed during the hottest part of the day. "You're much better off keeping your blinds or curtains closed during the hottest part of the day, then opening the windows later on once it's actually cooler outside. That's when your fan can really help move the cooler air around the house," he said.
Additional Tips for a Fly-Free Home
- Keep windows closed during the heat of the day; open them in the early morning and evening.
- Close curtains on windows that receive direct sunlight.
- Cover all fruit and avoid leaving dirty dishes out.
- Empty the bin regularly and clean up spills on counters.
Peskett added: "People often think flies just appear out of nowhere. Most of the time they're following food smells. If you can cut those down and avoid leaving your windows open all day, you're much less likely to end up with unwanted visitors."
