An expert has shared a simple and affordable method to prevent autumn leaves from blocking gutters and causing costly damage to homes. Glen Peskett, a circular saw blade specialist at Saxton Blades, warns that clogged drains can lead to flooding, water seepage, rotting fascia boards, and damage to floorboards, with repairs costing an average of £6,000 according to the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).
The key to prevention, says Peskett, is stopping leaves from entering the gutters in the first place. He recommends creating a DIY gutter guard using a roll of plastic mesh and cable ties. A roll of Blackspur Gutter Mesh costs just £4.97 on Amazon, while a pack of cable ties is available from CPC for 58p, bringing the total to around £5.
To install, cut the mesh to fit the length of the gutter, lay it over the top, and secure it with cable ties. “The leaves will sit on top of the mesh and blow away in the wind, while water can still pass through freely,” Peskett explains. This simple hack can save homeowners thousands in potential repairs.
Beyond gutter guards, Peskett advises trimming any tree limbs that overhang the roof to reduce leaf fall, using a saw for a clean cut to avoid splintering and protect tree health. He also recommends checking fences and sheds for loose panels that could be damaged by high winds, trimming warped or rotted wood to secure them.
