Households looking to keep flies at bay during the approaching heatwave are being urged to adopt a simple one-minute habit that also helps keep homes cool. Temperatures could reach 34C later this week, prompting many Britons to turn on fans. However, the way fans are used might actually attract more flies indoors.
Why Flies Enter Homes
DIY specialist Glen Peskett from Saxton Blades Multi Tools explained: "A lot of people think the best thing to do is open every window and stick a fan on full blast. The trouble is, if you've got your windows wide open in the middle of the day, you're making it much easier for flies to find their way inside."
Once inside, flies follow smells from fruit, food, or bins, especially during a heatwave when odours intensify. Peskett advised: "You're much better off keeping your blinds or curtains closed during the hottest part of the day, then opening the windows later on once it's actually cooler outside. That's when your fan can really help move the cooler air around the house."
How to Keep Your Home Cool and Fly-Free
To maintain a cool, fly-free environment, several measures can reduce the risk. Keep windows shut during the warmest hours; open them during early morning and evening instead. If a window receives direct sunlight, keep curtains drawn. Store all fruit away and never leave unwashed dishes lying around.
"It's also important to empty the bin regularly and clean up any spills on the counters," Peskett added. "People often think flies just appear out of nowhere. Most of the time they're following food smells. If you can cut those down and avoid leaving your windows open all day, you're much less likely to end up with unwanted visitors."
