Families in Scotland could receive up to £192 in support over the summer holidays if they qualify for free school meals during term time. The payments, provided by local councils, are designed to help cover food costs when schools are closed.
Who is eligible?
Parents and carers on Universal Credit with monthly earned income of no more than £885, Income Support, Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance, Income-based Employment and Support Allowance, or Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999 may qualify. The support is available to families whose children normally receive means-tested free school meals.
How much can families get?
The amount varies by council and child age. Some councils pay around £2.35 per child per day, while others provide up to £3 per day. In West Lothian, eligible families receive £96 per child across the summer break, meaning a family with two children could get up to £192.
How to apply
Families can apply through their local council's website. Payments are typically made directly into bank accounts or issued as vouchers. According to the Scottish Government, support is also available during Christmas and Easter holidays. Families do not need to wait until a new school term starts if they become eligible during the summer.
Additional context
All children in Primary 1 to Primary 5 attending council-run schools receive free school lunches during term time regardless of household income. However, holiday payments are generally only available to children who qualify due to low income.
Rebecca Fagan, policy executive at Advice Direct Scotland, said: "The summer holidays are fast approaching, so it's vital for families to know about the support available to help provide healthy meals for their children. Many Scots are facing financial troubles due to the cost-of-living and energy crises and will be worried about holiday-related expenses on top of rising bills."
She added: "Payments are available throughout the summer for families with children eligible for free school meals, so we encourage anyone who might benefit to apply now. Remember, payments will start promptly once your application is approved, and will also be available during other school holidays."
